I have happily decided that the longstanding feud between myself and a certain weblogging site <<throat-clearing sound>> should be over. Don't ask for the gory details.

You know, life's too short to judge others and hold petty grudges. In addition to only getting one chance at life (sorry, Paula Cole), the chance you have to interact with and encourage others may be your only one. Make it count. Spread the blessing. Forgive and forget, and more than that, understand who they are. Lately I've been reminded of how fleeting life really is, and while it hasn't made me any more eloquent, it's definitely impressed upon me how much more compassion and grace I should show others. That's not much of a nugget of wisdom, but it's all I can come up w/today. I think this will come more naturally with time. Bear w/me.

Today I had to work. It sounds mundane, but the fact that it's Saturday goes against everything I believe in. I work a M-F 9-5. Saturday is out of the question! But I actually think a sick part of me found it okay, nay, gratifying to go in to work today. I treated it like a service project and pretended I was building cottages for starved orphans rather than copyediting convention news stories. When I left I was so motivated I went to two stores and the gym--THE GYM. For a lazy person like me, this was a major achievement. This was possible my most productive day of the year. Imagine having the motivation of Albert Schweitzer, and leaving the fame and fortune of his life as an accomplished musician and extremely intelligent, educated person, went to live in Africa simply in order to serve others. He used every talent God gave him to multiply the blessing he was able to give others. Imagine if we all lived like that?...

Hmm... tonight only time for a short post. So, in short, a list of things I love less than God but still very much! The challenge lies in posting only things, not people, places, emotions, etc. . .

Loves: tea (iced or hot), pickles, TV via DVR/Tivo, Sephora, corduroy, robin's egg blue Tiffany boxes, Yoga/Pilates, The Amazing Race, Napoleon Dynamite, all things Jane Austen, Teen Girl Squad!, piano--and people who tear it up like Ben Folds! Oops I broke the no-people rule--, blogs, bracelets from exotic places, Egypt (and yes, I do have an Egyptian bracelet), in-flight movies, Heinz 57, snow flurries on my face, large beach towels, beach weather (where are you?? It's 45 outside!), Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, hats, Stila, magazines, the ever-Super Mario Bros., Relevant magazine, giant turkey legs from Disney, adolescent lit (Harry Potter!), Asbury College (I miss you), local art festivals, Manhattan, grape soda, Wes Anderson movies, cloves, my Kitchenaid mixer, Kentucky bluegrass, and let's end it on '80s New Wave!

Love,

So ... Let's talk about another "good thing"... Napoleon Dynamite.

Napoleon has become my, and maybe every other American twentysomething's underdog hero. But how old is he actually supposed to be? My guess is 9th grade, a groundling at public high school--navel lint.

The way he squints cracks me up. It brings back this feeling from junior high--that feeling after you've stayed up way too late watching TV or reading or playing video games and are now supremely annoyed that you have to go through the motions of pretending to learn, while secretly dreaming that somehow, you'd be able to go home sick and just crawl back into bed with all your clothes on. For real. I remember that.

He also gets totally frustrated with anyone for making him talk more than he feels like it. He punctuates this with exclamations of "GOSH!" and "IDIOT!"

Kid on Bus: What are you gonna do today, Napoleon?
Napoleon Dynamite: Whatever I feel like I wanna do, gosh!

The lying is another thing. For some reason, at a certain age it seemed completely acceptable to lie in order to make yourself sound cooler to your peers. Only it didn't make you sound cooler ... you sounded totally lame. Mostly because the lie was so outrageous that it was laughable. A few poor saps might've believed it. They probably don't like you anymore.

Don: Hey, Napoleon. What did you do last summer again?
Napoleon Dynamite
: I told you! I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines!
Don
: Did you shoot any?
Napoleon Dynamite
: Yes, like 50 of 'em! They kept trying to attack my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that?
Don
: What kind of gun did you use?
Napoleon Dynamite: A freakin' 12-gauge, what do you think?

Is Napoleon real? For sure--because he still lives in the heart of every geek who remembers having absolutely no control over their life. But once in awhile, for a great cause, he drops everything and lets loose. And dances like he's got canned heat in his heels tonight baby. Let's all pause and appreciate that.

Love,

Smanders
